History

Historically, this community originated when the Wabash Railroad built a station here in 1881, naming the town Balch. That same year, John Britton, a storekeeper, opened the post office and sought to rename the town after himself. After some deal-making, waiting and a payment of $500.00, he was able to convince the railroad to do so in 1888.

The Village of Britton was founded October 23, 1896.  A petition was filed at the clerk's office on October 14, 1896, signed by 64 voters asking the Board of Supervisors to order its then incorporation be deemed a village.  The necessary population to become a village was 300 residents, at the time the population was 386.  Action was taken by the Board on October 23, 1896.

The Village is .9 square miles in size and is located on the M-50, about nine miles northeast of Adrian, along an active railroad. The main industries are agriculture and small business.
